A time for renewal...

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 6, 2008, 2:28 AM
It's been a tragically long time since I've been back to DeviantArt and updated the gallery - when I logged in there were nearly 6000 deviations and 850 messages to be reviewed. Far too many for one mere mortal to digest in one setting, so I'll start by saying thank you so very much to everyone that has continued to visit, add favorites and comment on my very cob-webbed gallery.

Too many RL complications, both negative and positive, have descended on the household in the last year to recount here, but it's time for me to get back to life again and see what I can salvage of this mad experiment.

To my very dear friends (and you know who you are) that have been so incredibly understanding and patient during this difficult time I thank and love you all. It's time for some much needed spring cleaning, and as soon as I'm able I'm going to renew my DA subscription when budget allows.

I'm here, I'm steadily getting back on my feet, and will be posting more updates as I have them.

I don't have it myself - my computer is too old for it to work. I'm just reporting what I have been told by other Mac users. On the other hand, I *still* prefer Mac's to PC's even without the ability to use PC programs. :)
~HeatherWind:iconHeatherWind: Jul 13, 2006, 12:43:26 AM
I appreciate the heads up on the Mac issue - I've heard from many artists that love them, but none so far that have spoken of being able to use their Windows programs. And I've no idea what the emulator is.

I agree with you abou the generational thing ... except that, like you, my tech support isn't someone young. My tech support is either my wife (slightly older than me) or a friend of mine from back in college (ditto) ... Somehow they made the jump to dealing with these lumps of contrary silicon, and I really didn't. In college my specialty was quantum chemistry, we had to do calculations on cray computers, and I *still* couldn't deal with the computers. The programs I could deal with, it was just a matter of reading the directions in all the manuals, but when they stopped doing what they were supposed to do ... wham ... I had to get help from someone else.

I guess in some ways I'm just an old coot ... Explains why I chose the icon I did. :) Remind me sometime to tell you the story of how I crashed every computer in my high school by accident ...

I am personally very much a Mac person - I find them much more intuitive than PC's - but I will warn you that I've heard stories of some PC programs not working even with the emulator ... The emulator makes things a lot better, but it's not perfect.

LOL don't feel bad - you're not the only one. It's harder for our generation to grasp onto this kind of stuff sometimes, because unlike the kids that followed we weren't born into using them. Hell, I remember learning computer on the old 9 inch floppy disks, or on the cassette tape drives with our beat up Tandys.

As for tech support, that's my Dad. He built my system to begin with (gotta love a mechanic - he taught himself how to build a computer back when he turned 60, and now the only thing he can't do is install the OS software yet) so he knows what equipment I have. I can troubleshoot most software issues, or at least know where to find help online, but when it comes to hardware that's Dad.

I need to seriously update my equipment though - I'm thinking of updating to a Mac now that I know they can run Windows software too. That was the only reason I hadn't gone Mac sooner since it would mean replacing my programs.

Yep - thanks for the explanation that made sense! It's really amazing ... I'm a professional teacher, can do calculus, chemistry, physics, have an IQ of 174 or some such ... and when it comes to computers I'm basically inept. Somehow they just don't click for me ... and have the tendency to do things 'that just aren't possible!' according to my computer-literate friends when I get my hands on them.

Last weekend, my computer suddenly started making invisible icons when you saved new files. If you saved a new file to a folder that had 10 items, it still claimed it had 10 items, no icon appeared ... but if you tried to save again, it claimed the file already existed and asked if you wanted to save over it. But if you searched for the file with the find function, it claimed it didn't exist ... What had I done to my computer to cause this, you may ask? Nada. So I called a friend who is a computer guru, offered her family lunch, they came over and she tried to figure it out while the rest of us chatted and watched Wimbledon.

Eventually she did, corrected the settings that had somehow gotten wrong (and I hadn't gone into the settings!) ... and now everything is fine again. Her family gets a lunch or dinner out several times a year this way, whenever my computer starts doing something really weird ...

Ah well ... at least now I know how to do icons. Until I somehow crash the entire DA system trying to do one, of course. ;)

LOL I don't mind it really - some of them are fun. And YAY you got the icon!

Hey, you're only tagged if you want to be! :)

Let's see if I can get it to work this time: :)
~HeatherWind:iconHeatherWind: Jul 11, 2006, 4:56:31 PM
Oooh you rotten beastie you! LOL

And if you want to link the icons, you don't need to put the little * or = symbols in front of people's names. Do :.iconusername: (make sure the name is written as they have it spelled, including caps, and no spaces. Also, take out the period before the name part as I have in that example format). It will come out like this:
